João Galrão

João Galrão lives and works in Sintra, Lisbon. From 1996 to 2001 he studied at Ar.Co, Lisbon, where he completed the Advanced Course in Visual Arts in 2001. He has exhibited individually and with collectives in galleries in many countries and cities like Prague, São Paulo, Cork, London, Paris, Spain and is represented in major Museum collections and Foundations like Calouste Gulbenkian, Elvas Contemporary Art Museum, PLMJ Art Foundation, Benetton, Atlantic Banc and Berjé collection.

From October 2017 - March 2018 he is one of the artists included in the group exhibition "Gender in the Art. Body, Sexuality, Identity, Resistance" in the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado (MNAC) in Lisbon.


His approach is organic and sometimes erotic and shifts between sculpture, painting, collage, photography and performance.
At times provocative and conceptually, João Galrão works along the border of sacred and religious concerns and profane and erotic ones.
